Ask families what they want from their wealth advisors, and fee clarity is usually near the top of the list. Michael Gold, founder and CEO of Gold Family Wealth in Westport, Connecticut, says that focus, while understandable, overlooks a bigger issue.
For 25 years, Gold has watched families accumulate advisors, estate attorneys, CPAs, investment managers, without those advisors ever coordinating with one another. He argues that this fragmentation, not fee disclosure, is the real transparency crisis in wealth management.
Building Coordination Into the Model
Michael Gold’s Westport firm operates on a principle he calls orchestration rather than accumulation. Instead of bringing in additional specialists whenever a new issue surfaces, the firm focuses on aligning the professionals a family already employs around a single coordinated plan.
“People do not think about the end in mind early enough,” Gold says, pointing to business owners who must delay a sale by a full year just to correct their asset structure and reduce unnecessary tax exposure.
That kind of planning failure, Gold says, traces back to advisors working in silos rather than any individual shortfall in expertise. His firm’s ultra-high-net-worth practice, which he describes as the intellectual engine of the organization, develops tools such as advanced financial modeling and multigenerational governance planning that inform how the rest of the firm approaches complex client situations.
The scale of the issue is growing. Close to three-quarters of privately held business owners plan to transition or sell within the next decade, a shift tied to an estimated $10 to $14 trillion in wealth. Gold says many of these owners are unprepared simply because their advisors haven’t been coordinating.
