Dr. Saad Saad – an industry icon and innovator.

Necessity is the mother of invention. While to many this is nothing but a cliche, it indeed is not for one recently retired Dr. Saad Saad. In fact, it is the inspiration that made him juggle between his successful pediatric surgeon career and being an industry innovator.

Dr. Saad Saad was born in Kuwait and raised in a family consisting of his seven siblings. Despite the numerous challenges of being in the Middle East, he never settled but opted to pursue his career until he reached his goals vigorously.

He studied in Cairo University where he graduated with a medical degree. After his studies, he went to England for an internship program before proceeding to the U.S. where he worked until he got his board certification for his occupation.

In addition to his decorated career spanning for 47 years, Dr. Saad Saad has made two inventions which have revolutionized the medical industry. Instruments and methods that offer suction in a rigid endoscope in addition to maintaining visuals of the target area.

One of those challenges that made it quite difficult for doctors to carry out their work was obstruction which was often caused by fluids in the body. While traditional endoscopes enabled doctors to look inside the patient’s body, the obstacle often made this work impossible.

To try and get rid of the barrier, the doctor often had to get a separate suction device to remove the fluid before continuing with the work. However, Dr. Saad Saad invented a device that incorporates both the suction device with the endoscope.

Dr. Saad Saad replaced the anti-fog port with a suction-irrigation device. With this invention, observation and suction can now be both done without necessarily removing the endoscope. Catheter with an Integral Electromagnetic Location Identification Device.

Frequent radiations emitted by x-rays were often a problem for patients in the long run. While Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRIs could provide a solution to this, the fact that they were not portable significantly affected their viability as a solution.

However, Dr. Saad Saad invented came up with this device which locates a catheter without requiring a machine scan on the body. It uses electromagnetic waves to find catheters since they have a magnetically permeable material inside the coil and often a couple of wires that are confined by its walls.

Medical industry professionals use an exterior device which scans the patient’s body through the wires and light is illuminated in the locating device which gives away the location of the catheter.

These inventions by Dr. Saad Saad have significantly improved the industry. They have not only made the work of doctors easier but also safer which is suitable for both the doctors and patients. Learn more: https://medium.com/@dr1saadsaad
